ALL ABOARD THE FEELINGS TRAIN, FOREVER STOPPED AT TIN CAN APPRECIATION STATION

Consider two things!

1. the fact that robots reduce me to a pathetic, incoherent, philosophical mess
2. the fact that the raps are and always have been some of my favorite moments in Homestuck (one of which is, in fact, my favorite pesterlog)

1 + 2 = BOY HOWDY DO I LOVE RAPPING ROBOTS

As minor characters go, Squarewave and Sawtooth are multi-layered and so fucking cool when you really dig in. First of all, their designs are tight as hell, unique, and purposeful, which is something that Hussie has down to a science. Their names reference non-sinusoidal waveforms and their mouths are drawn in the shape of their respective wave shapes, but the awesome does not stop there. Note this sentence from the wiki page: “Non-sinusoidal waveforms are important in, for example, mathematics, music and electronics.” I mean, COME ON. The meticulousness of their designs and the way in which they reference and embody mathematics, robots, and creative media absolutely floors me.

Not only that, but they have personality! Squarewave is an enthusiastic and eager dork, and Sawtooth is a chill and inscrutable dude. If you don’t think Squarewave is completely adorable, then there is something wrong with you. And they wear clothes!!! The hats and hoodies are just too perfect for words.

As far as how I feel about them together, I ship them as inseparable best buddies, but I can honestly dig any kind of thing with them (and there is some smokin’ stuff out there in the ether). The recent trend of fanart and ask blogs and beautiful things with them is AMAZING and I don’t want it to ever stop OH WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT PERFECT SEGUE RIGHT THERE, GJ SELF:

Go read And It Don’t Stop, right now. The art is G O R G E O U S, the rhymes are smooth as silk, and literally EVERYTHING from Dirk’s updates are referential to it. Dirk’s fetch modus is taken directly from AIDS (an unfortunate and coincidental acronym); Tech-Hop is the primary mode of battle in AIDS, and the rap battles are done with GROOVES (the subject of the rap) and SHADES (the word the rhymes should coincide with), which control each contestant’s battle robot. Dirk’s Tech-Hop Modus has Groove rows and Shade columns, which control which item gets ejected (also there’s a Crush soda, which references the main robot in AIDS, Crush Groove).

Basically, Hussie has been amazing lately and no chain of updates has ever given me so many feelings like these have. He gives minor characters this kind of life that I find so satisfying and exciting, and I honestly believe that Sawtooth and Squarewave could still be relevant to the story. Even if they aren’t, I still think they they are wonderful characters that would be really fun to explore in a fic! They would have great adventures (especially in context of And It Don’t Stop). But I really do want Hussie to keep them alive.
